FPSC Test Pattern for Meteorologist & Assistant Meteorologist

Like most FPSC General Recruitment posts, the Meteorologist and Assistant Meteorologist selection process begins with a written test made up entirely of multiple-choice questions drawn from the syllabus notified in the official job advertisement. Candidates who clear the written test are then shortlisted for a psychological assessment and/or interview, following FPSC’s standard General Recruitment procedure. The exact number of questions, total marks, paper duration and pass criteria are fixed separately for each advertisement, so candidates should always confirm these details from the latest FPSC advertisement and syllabus before their test. What stays constant across cycles is the subject weightage: the syllabus is built around scientific and quantitative subjects rather than general knowledge, which is why focused subject-wise practice, organised below, is the most reliable way to prepare.

Syllabus Overview

The FPSC syllabus for these posts is organised into seven subject areas, some shared by both posts and some specific to only one. Use the quick summary below alongside the subject table above to plan your preparation:

  • Climatology — atmospheric processes, weather systems, climate classification and the climate of Pakistan and the surrounding region.
  • Basics of Physics — mechanics, heat and thermodynamics, waves, electricity and magnetism, and the gas laws underlying atmospheric behaviour.
  • Basic Mathematics — algebra, calculus, statistics and the quantitative reasoning skills used in meteorological calculations.
  • Environmental Studies — ecosystems, pollution, natural resources and environmental policy.
  • Seismology (Assistant Meteorologist only) — earthquakes, seismic waves and geophysical monitoring techniques.
  • Basic Geology (Assistant Meteorologist only) — earth structure, rocks, minerals and plate tectonics.
  • Research and Analysis (Meteorologist only) — data interpretation, statistical analysis and scientific research methods.

About the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD)

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) is the country’s official agency for weather forecasting, climate monitoring and geophysical research, operating under the Aviation Division, Ministry of Defence. Headquartered in Islamabad, PMD represents Pakistan at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and runs forecasting offices, observatories and seismic monitoring stations across the country. Its mandate spans daily weather forecasts and severe-weather warnings, climate and drought monitoring, earthquake and seismological observation, agromet advisories for farmers, flood forecasting, and aviation and marine meteorology services. To staff these functions, PMD periodically recruits Meteorologists and Assistant Meteorologists through the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC), the professional entry point into the department’s scientific cadre.
