Who was the first martyr (Shaheed) in Islam among female companions?

Hazrat Sumayya bint Khabbat (RA), mother of Hazrat Ammar ibn Yasir (RA), was the first person—and first woman—to achieve martyrdom in Islam. She was tortured and killed by Abu Jahl for refusing to renounce her belief in Tawheed. Her husband, Hazrat Yasir (RA), became the first male martyr of Islam shortly thereafter.
